My First Foray Into Rent The Runway

Have you guys tried Rent the Runway yet? I haven't, but I know some girls who have and who loved it. I'm sort of torn on the whole concept though, because - if you couldn't tell - I'm sort of a clothing pack rat. I really regret giving away the Behnaz Sarafpour for Target silver skirt I bought years ago. I think about it a lot.

So why would I want to pay the price of two Forever 21 dresses to rent designer for 4 nights?  (Or, if we're being perfectly honest, what I'd really do is take the $50 right down to Neiman Marcus and buy the real thing.)

Well, smart people over Rent the Runway sent me a $50 birthday credit, and I'm aiming to find out how I like the service while also looking AMAZING on my 25th birthday

A Word In Wedge Wise

Wedges are totally resurging in popularity. You can pretty much find any style of shoe in a wedge now, which is awesome for klutzes like me who are much more graceful with a little more sole support. I have wedges for work, wedges for play, crazy high wedges, cork-heeled wedges - the list goes on. Wedges are comfortable and now more stylish than ever.

For summer, the sandal wedge is obviously the best choice. Right now, I'm loving bringing fun fabrics to your feet for summer - denim or linen accents. I'm also loving incorporating hints of neon on my feet. 

As a side note, I feel like every summer, espadrilles are super popular, and yet fashion magazines are always like, oooh espadrilles, new and hot for summer! Just keep your espadrilles around, folks - they'll always be wearable in summer.

Looking for a bang for your buck? Any of these wedges would be great any time of the year. I'm not so sure suede is a cold month-only fabric, but keep it light - a neutral taupe or beige. Animal print is always fabulous. These leopard wedges are vaguely reminiscent of some Alexander Wang booties, but a little more universally wearable.

What do you think of the Tinley Road pair? I have a similar pair of heavy black wedges that I got last summer from Forever 21 - and I wore them long into the fall. I actually think these would look pretty cool with some socks if you dare to try the trend.

Birthday Wish List

If you know me, you know I'm minorly obsessed with my birthday. OK, majorly. I don't know if it comes from the neglect felt by having a summer birthday (I never got a party in school, kids were always out of town on my birthday, etc.), or just pure narcissism, but I love celebrating my special day - even if it's just myself!

This year, I'm turning 25, and I might be quarter-life-crisising. I am OLD y'all. After my birthday, I will be closer to 30 than 20 (I just vomited in my mouth a little). Marty McFly, bring the time machine and take me with you! Anyway, it's a big one.

The other night, my mom asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I had no idea. You'd think being on shopping hiatus, I'd have a wish list a mile long. But I don't. It's weird.

Finally, I was able to put together a brief list of things I would like for my birthday this year. PS friends: I reserve the right to edit this as I think of more!

There's something about yellow that makes me so so happy. From the yellow shift dress I got on super-sale years ago at Madewell in NYC (before it was online!) that always garners compliments, to my favorite yellow belt from Forever 21 that is seriously on its last legs, wearing yellow brightens my day.

When I saw this look from Altuzarra's resort 2011 collection, I was in love. I love the classic lines and colors with the edgy fabric, moto-style jacket and cuffed ankle heels.

Have you been lusting after those J. Brand red jeans you've seen everywhere? Surprisingly, I think this trend is totally wearable on most people. Nothing wrong with a pop of color in an outfit - especially on your pants.

That said, I'm not anticipating to see people wearing bright red denim in the seasons to come. So don't go shelling out nearly 200 smackeroos on some jeans you'll wear maybe six times.

Freak out! Eddie Borgo at J. Crew

I DIED a little on the inside when I saw that my jewelry designer crush Eddie Borgo (CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award runner-up) was designing a capsule collection for J. Crew. I don't know if they didn't do much press beforehand, or if I just totally missed it until the day before the launch, but this is truly amazing.

I went online today to see what I could snag. The prices run from $38 for the studded bow pins to $175 for a fringed mesh pocket necklace. There are also some totally hip studded belts.

I'm contemplating snagging the black cone and pearl cuff ($95). Cones are such an Eddie Borgo signature, and I just love it! The pearl necklace ($150) is awesome too. Looks like I have some decisions to make...

From the back of Grandma's couch to your closet

Crochet and macrame - it sounds more like crafts at summer camp than something you'd want to buy at Bergdorfs.

But, of course, designers have found a way to bring this look from the back of Grandma's couch to the closets of fashionistas everywhere.

The idea of wear something more kitschy than silk or jersey first appealed to me when I saw Olivia Palermo in this DVF number at Fashion's Night Out last September. The dress was actually available - and on discount - when OP wore it (which I love... We can't all get pieces right off the runway).

Even though the dress was old, the look was very fresh. Olivia was wearing what had just been seen all over the New York runways for Spring 2011. Just look at the wide range of designers that featured the knit look:

Black: From blah to beautiful

So, I'm not the only one with a new job. My friend Claire got a fantastic new gig in NYC - an awesome upgrade from being a banker. But with a new job comes a new dress code - she's required to wear mostly black.

This is both a blessing and a curse. Black is universally flattering and slimming, and it's easy to find almost any item of clothing in the dark hue. Black goes with anything.

But it can be easy to get into a rut when your 9-5 look is the same shade 24/7 (or 24/5 as it were). How can you keep one color from become one-note?

Here are my tips to take your black from basic to bold.

(Note: This is intended to be inspiration... I don't actually expect Claire to go out and buy a $1k pencil skirt! Also, I've bolded what I consider to be wardrobe staples - must haves for every woman!)

1. Belt it. Start with a black sheath dress - a wardrobe staple - and change it up by adding a fabulous, unique belt. Studs, sequins, or floral details add texture and depth to your look.

2. Grab a bold accessory. A fun statement necklace can make an old dress or shirt look like something new and different. Fill your wardrobe with fabulous jewelry. It will be the first thing people notice on black canvas (in fact, they might not notice you totally wore that dress last Tuesday).

3. Play with texture. A shirt with a peplum or a unique necklace (like above) will totally elevate the interesting level of a look. The technical twill of this shirt gives a fabulous sheen.

3. Change up the fabric. Wool and cotton are great for the office, but when you are in an artier field, you have the luxury of exploring fabrics beyond the suiting standards. I love this pleated leather skirt from Vince. It also adds some volume on bottom to change up your silhouette (and avoids the borderline-skanky look of fitted leather).

4. Play dress-up. This rule can be a little tricky because there is a fine line between costume and couture.  Dress with a theme - it will force you to put things together you might not otherwise, and maybe push the boundaries of the banality of your normal outfits. But be careful - you don't want to take it too far or too seriously or you'll become a parody of your outfit. For instance, I call this look the 'saucy secretary.' But make sure to keep your hair loose - don't dress the look to a T.

PS A black blouse with a feminine detail is such a wardrobe necessity. You can wear this with skinny jeans and a leather jacket at night to edge it out or dress it up for work... Just love it.

5. Trend is your friend. Black+the latest trendy piece = instant chic. I love these wide-legged pants for the workplace, and they are so much more fun than your standard black trousers. Keep the rest of the outfit simple, classic and clean. Invest in a basic black tank made with a stretchy fabric (looks nicer than plain jersey) to wear with the pants (or really anything!).

6. Get inspired by the classics. The reason why they are classic is because they work - they've worked for many years, and they will continue to work. Mix your trendy pieces with your classic pieces, and your wardrobe will seem infinite. I love these straight-legged pants from Gap - Very Audrey Hepburn without being a drain on your wallet.

7. Comfort is key. It's so hard to wake up in the morning and want to put on that uncomfortable dress when all you want to do is wear those half-size too big but oh so comfy pants - even though you wore them twice last week. So make sure ALL of your clothes fit well and this won't be an issue. And remember: Some days, you'll just need the easy comfortable outfit.

8. A word about shoes: Claire didn't let me know if her shoes had to be black, but I guessed conservatively. I have tons of black shoes, and honestly, I rarely think my shoe wardrobe is missing anything. A good pair of black pumps, boots and flats will get you far. Also, wedges are my new favorite thing; the Kate Spade wedges above are classic, stylish and comfortable.

Stripes stripes stripes

Hi, my name is Marta, and I'm a stripeaholic.

If there's one thing I cannot get enough of in my wardrobe, it's stripes. To count the number of striped shirts, you'd need more than one hand. And if the fiance gets anything navy+white striped? Forget about it, that's going in my side of the closet. The last time I went shopping with my mom, I was like a puppy on a leash - she had to yank me away from chasing every striped item of clothing I saw.

But, really, what's not to love? It's so classic and simple - and it goes with everything (Just the other day, I paired a navy striped shirt with my printed Hermes scarf... Perfect). And right now, stripes are ubiquitous, so your options are endless. But because it's so versatile, you can customize the look to your personal style.

What my closet is missing is a striped dress. (OK, we can be honest that my closet isn't really missing that much - except maybe a Chanel 2.55, a Burberry trench and some Louboutins - but let's go with it).

J'aime mon carre (I love my scarf)

Call me cutting-edge. Scarves are having a resurgence in popularity - seen on the runways of Emilio Pucci, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior. Thanks to one very tasteful fiance, I was the lucky recipient of a beautiful Hermes scarf for Christmas.

This one to be precise:

(Something about an Hermes scarf makes me want to parler Francais.)

But the most fashionable trend setters aren't only wearing their scarves over the shoulders, as was once the standard. Thanks to Hermes, scarves are finding new ways to fit into wardrobes. Just check out ilovemyscarf.com.

So luckily, I have a wealth of inspiration for how to wear my new scarf. I still struggle a bit, though. I tried it over the shoulders with a coordinating orange turtleneck, which I liked, but it's a "once in a while" look. I've also tried the turband, a la Man Repeller. Not gonna lie, I love the look, but I can't get my hair to fall quite right. I'll work on it, don't worry.

Tribal party

Here's an interesting trend: tribal looks. This is definitely not one for everyone, at least at first. It's bold, it's out there, it's a little kooky. But it's fun and fresh. If you have any doubt about that, check out this post over at So Much To Smile About for some gorgeous shots of the trend.

Tribal prints are everywhere, so pick up a fabulous Missoni, Etro or McQueen dress to make the look front and center. Or, if you have your reservations about the trend but you're still want to try it out, you're in luck. There is a wealth of tribal-inspired jewelry to add just a hint of the look to your outfit. Pair any of the pieces from the House of Harlow 1960 tribal collection with a basic black T-shirt and skinny jeans or a simple, black jersey dress and you can totally rock it without overkill. How Would You Wear: Chambray shirt

I wasn't 100 percent on board with the chambray shirt trend. I waffled on it: Is this going to be a fleeting trend or is this a wardrobe staple? I nearly bought one last July, but ultimately decided against it. But then in December, while at the J. Crew factory store, I stumbled across one of the "Perfect Fit" chambray shirts for $35. Too good of a deal to pass up, I decided, and boy, am I glad I did. I wore it twice this weekend (hope that's not too gross!).

But another part of my concern about the shirt was how to wear it. Is denim-on-denim too garish for daily wear? Or is it so Western-y that it looks comical?

Crop it to me

I must say, my favorite part about the menswear trend is probably the resurgence of pants. We all still love our skinny jeans, but it's nice to have options, right? From flared jeans to 70s-inspired wide-legged trousers, I like wearing a pair of pants in which I can enjoy a sandwich.

Probably my favorite new pant trend is the cropped trouser. These have been on the scene for a while, and they aren't going anywhere. Just check out the pre-fall collections - especially Alexander Wang's, which feature the shortened pantalones prominently throughout. 

I love the versatility of these pants. The tailored look makes them wearable in almost any situation. Wear them on weekends with a slouchy T by Alexander Wang T-shirt or with a sharp blazer or button up and head to the office. In this case, I like letting the pants do the talking - keep the lines simple and unfettered. And make sure you show off your waist with a belt or a fitted top. Just because you're wearing menswear doesn't mean you need to look like a man.
