Saturday Style: Pre-Fourth Fun
It's not quite the Fourth of July yet, but it sure feels like it. The air is hot and sticky, and patriotism abounds in our nation's capital. I'm channeling breezy casual to stay comfortable and cool - comfort is key on weekends where you know you'll be outside a lot and walking a lot. I like the splash of blue. It's like, hey America, it's almost your birthday, but not quite yet.
Barbeques await! Hope your weekend is off to a great start.

Well red
Ay Caramba! Red is muy caliente right now. Just check out the latest from the runways - red made a showing in a majority of the pre-fall collections.
Though red may seem "trendy," I'd argue it never goes out of style. It's a power color that persists. I mean, talk about a confidence booster. Walk into a room in red, and you say "Look at me. I'm spicy."
Daring to go red - all red? Here are some tips from Shopbop's Style Director Morgan Wendelborn:
Choose complementary, subtly different shades and textures. As stunning as an all-red suit cut from the same fabric looks on the runway, it’s not very wearable in real life. The key is to pair slightly mismatched shades (like a poppy-colored silk Equipment blouse and tomato-toned Jenni Kayne chinos) and keep your accessories neutral.
The sure-fire way is to pair a print with a solid—for example, printed Dolce Vita shorts and a solid Mara Hoffman bustier top.
I'd also note that, when wearing red, you want to keep it covered... Because, really, red+lots of skin=trampy, unfortunately. Red is synonymous with arousal in the brain, so tone down any decolletage and avoid any miniskirts. You're hot enough!
If you're not ready for a full-red look, try amping up your accessories. A red belt, red tights or red jewelry add a pop of color against a neutral outfit. (But it would also look great with a golden tone or navy.) With your accessories, you can wear one for a subtle effect, but what really looks spectacular are a few, well-chosen and coordinated red accessories (like shoes and a necklace).
And winter provides a perfect excuse to don a red scarf, red gloves or even an adorable red cloche. Leighton Meester has been spotted filming Gossip Girl in red winter accessories, and Glamour has some great, affordable picks for accessorizing like her.
Finally, if you're really bold, try red lipstick. Just ask red lipstick poster girl Gwen Stefani, who is the newest spokesperson for L'Oreal Paris Infallible lipstick. I mean, this girl makes it look effortless. I recommend heading to a department store makeup counter to find the perfect red for you. With my coloring, I can't really rock the orangey-red tones (much to my chagrin), so I wear a blue-based red from MAC called Dubonnet. Then head to the drug store for a cheaper version!

Saturday Style: Mixing brown and black
This outfit was inspired by my friend Liz's style, as well as some recent purchases I've made (including a similar sweater from Forever 21 and these exact Target booties - super cute and real suede!).
Mixing black and brown so directly hasn't always been kosher, but that is no longer the case. Mix away! The rule of the weekend is this: Break a few fashion rules. More often than not, you'll actually look cool.

Saturday Style: Shopping the spring collections
It might be a little (OK, a lot) early, but I'm ready for spring. If it were, say, 30 degrees warmer, here's what I'd want to be wearing today.
1. J. Crew maxi check perfect shirt: $72
2. Y-3 mid-rise skinny jeans, available at The Outnet: $77
3. Tory Burch Eddie naplak ballerina flat, available at Neiman Marcus: $178
4. Chloe Marcie small leather bag, available at Net-A-Porter: $1780
5. Gorjana alphabet charm necklace, available at Shopbop: $50
I'm really thinking I might pick up this lovely little J. Crew shirt when I return something this week. But I don't want to jump the gun into spring! Do you think it's too early to shop for warmer weather?

Saturday Style: Vince textured-knit sweater
What I wish I was wearing today:
While this wintery weather does not make me want to wear shorts at all, I can't help but love this cozy casual look. Throw on some skinny jeans, and I am so there.
I decided to recreate this ensemble for a DC Saturday full of holiday shopping and outdoor activities (like ZooLights!). I also wanted to make it a bit cheaper because I just cannot justify spending $145 on a sweatshirt. Sorry, Vince.
1. Forever 21 Relaxed Dolman Sweater: $24.80 (not the right color, but grey is great too!)
2. Old Navy Jeggings in Ruby: $39.50
3. Ruche Walk with Charlie Oxford Booties in Tan: $39.99
4. Spendid Classic Raceback Tank, available at Piperlime: $44.00
5. J. Crew Marled Knit Snood: $49.50
6. Juicy Couture pave pyramid studs, available at Shopbop: $48.00
This outfit also sort of reminds me of what Zoey (Jennifer Morrison) wore on the Thanksgiving episode of "How I Met Your Mother."

Saturday Style: Seventies Chic

I love this Londoner's hat because it's not too floppy. It looks super cool with her fringe bangs and the retro mustard turtleneck and flared jeans.
Turtlenecks are sort of back in vogue, n'est pas? They don't work on everyone, and rarely do they photograph well (hello, double chin!), but this girl works it.
If I were dressing up today, this is totally the outfit I'd want to put on. However, for now, I'm in leggings and long-sleeves for a nice bike ride in this beautiful weather. The fiance and I are going to try the new Capital Bike Share program and head up the C&O canal. If we happen to pass through Georgetown (we will), I just might have to try to find a floppy hat and cool, colorful turtleneck!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Saturday Style: Biking with a Birkin

I obviously am a huge fan of Olivia P's style. She never looks like she's trying too hard. From her Tibi leather shorts to her go-to Birkin, I just love her look. Completely impractical for my life, but a girl can dream of a life of "working" at Elle magazine and "biking" around NYC in an outfit that costs more than my rent for a year...
